For Heavy Duty Use
MDF (medium-density fiberboard) is an extremely popular material for all sorts of stuff – it’s cheap, easily accessible, versatile, heavy etc. But there’s one big, big downside to it: when you try to drill or drive screws on its edge, it just splits. But there is 2 little things that will change the game forever, and let you drive screws into MDF with no splits:
1. Clamp the sides of the workpiece with a handscrew. This is almost disgustingly simple, but genius, and makes it almost impossible for the MDF to split.
2. Make a pilot hole.
3. Use straight-shanked screws. The “regular” tapered woodscrew is like a wedge that’s specifically designed to split MDF apart.
